Glenn Shanholtzer competed in sports his entire life. Not just one sport — he played practically all of them: baseball, basketball, tennis, football and, more recently, adult league softball. That competitiveness was instilled in him at an early age and continues to shine through today. You can tell this because he is a frequent member of FitnessBank’s Top 25 Leaderboard.
How many races have you completed?
“I’ve run one marathon and a couple of halfs, but none of them compare to my favorite race, The Peachtree Road Race. I was inspired by my mother, who was a frequent runner of the race, to run it for the very first time and I never looked back. At one point I had run in 20 straight Peachtree Road Races but that streak ended finally when we decided to take a vacation for the Fourth of July.”
What’s your favorite place to run?
“That vacation took us to a favorite running spot, the beach. There’s nothing like a nice morning run on the beach to clear your mind. But that can be hard to do very often since the nearest beach to Tucker is roughly four hours away.”
What’s your step goal?
“I try — and get — the typical 10,000 steps, but it doesn’t always happen. I try and run at least three or four times a week, and those days it is easy for me to reach my goal. Other days can be a struggle. I’m always pushing it to get on the FitnessBank Leaderboard. Now that same mindset has been spread throughout the family. My 12-year-old, soccer-playing son wears a step tracker, too, although being the team’s goalie may sometimes limit his count and help me get ahead.”
Top 3 ideas to get your steps in:
- Circle the field during my son’s soccer practice.
- Park at the bottom of the parking deck and hit the extra flights of stair.
- Roam the neighborhood.
